#2 Re: Forum admin » OpenID support issue » Yesterday 22:16:47

Have made some subtle changes to registration system to thwart bots. Can you still login with OpenID MadHatter?

#4 Re: Forum admin » Please suggest any new categories you want » 2017-02-09 12:04:49

Yeah I don't want to block blind people for example.

I'll work out some sort of captcha when I get round to it.

Blue_Sea do you often go to labour party conferences? I myself have never been to any political conference at all.

Thanks for flagging this up!

Will look into it later.

#8 Re: Operating Systems » Installing Trisquel along side windows 10 » 2017-01-01 18:04:46

I don't know how to do this. But I don't like dual-booting with Windows anyway because Windows update has been known to trash OSes it's installed along-side. All I can suggest is either:

  • Make a disk-clone backup, wipe windows, install Trisquel, and re-install windows in a VM.

  • Have two computers, one for Windows and one for trisquel.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

#10 Re: The Social Room » User numbers? » 2016-12-06 21:12:44

Of course the forum isn't only for normies, it's for elite people too. But elite hackers already have great ways to communicate which is probably why there's little interest in this forum at the moment.

#11 Re: The Social Room » User numbers? » 2016-12-06 21:07:28

OK let me give you a personal rant on what my vision is for Free Software in the UK:

I want to teach Free Software to the normal people. I don't care whether they embrace, it or reject it, or are indifferent to it. But I want people to know about it.

The other thing I want to do is make sure that there is a support structure for people who want to learn Free Software in the UK. That is the purpose of this forum. And the forum is already succeeding at making support available even if no-one is using it.

So what we need isn't publicity for the forum, it's publicity for Free Software.

When I get round to it I might make promotional materials and give then out locally. And when I get a job that doesn't require me to work evenings I will try to start local group or something.

There's lot's of Free Software hackers in the UK (F-Droid and Ministry of Freedom are based in UK and I know OpenBSD, Debian etc have devs here). But we have no outreach to normal people. Except in Manchester. Free Software Manchester is great I believe. I'll go visit them some day and ask them how they spread Free Software to the masses.

As a side note the reason I publish so many "philosophical" articles on Free Software on my blog is as a sort of practice to help me learn how to explain Free Software to normal people.

I haven't tried contacting the F-Droid peeps or Debian peeps about this forum. Perhaps I should.

Anyway I'm not sure I answered your question but hopefully I wrote something useful. And thanks for making an effort to be present here you've been great.

#12 Re: Programs, Apps » Promoting Jabber / XMPP use » 2016-11-19 18:39:07

Well I've never tried XMPP... should do so I guess.

#13 Re: Forum admin » Restrict posting links for new users » 2016-11-12 14:15:18

OK I've done as you suggested. Users with less than 4 posts now cannot post links.

Also I deleted the 2800 users that have registered an account but not posted anything.

#14 Re: Forum admin » Restrict posting links for new users » 2016-11-11 22:45:00

Well have no fear; one of these days I will grow tired of deleting the spam manually and set up a solution.

#15 Re: Forum admin » Restrict posting links for new users » 2016-11-10 21:18:13

BTW I might be able to give you SSH access to the server if you want to help with sysadmin. As long as we document all the changes me make or use a VCS or something.

#16 Re: Forum admin » Restrict posting links for new users » 2016-11-10 21:09:53

I don't mind deleting all the spam manually TBH, but I guess it would be better if the Atom feed wasn't constantly gorged with spam.

I don't wanna discriminate against new users by stopping them posting links either though...

What do you think about Stop Forum Spam? https://stopforumspam.com/

There's no plugin for it but I might be able to write one.

#17 Information and Guides » How to get a phone running mostly Free Software » 2016-11-04 15:39:12

  1. Using the CyanogenMod devices page, find a phone that's well supported by CyanogenMod. Buy it from your favourite phone store.

  2. Put cyanogenmod on it using the instructions on the Cyanogenmod site. Better not to install "Google Apps" because they're proprietary.

  3. Go to phone's Settings > Security and check "unknown sources". Using the phone's web browser, visit f-droid.org to download and install F-Droid.

  4. Now install some cool apps from F-Droid and enjoy!

What would be an easy way for a complete beginner to set up a blog in the UK, preferably hosted on British soil?

Not for me, to recommend to other people.

Free software (also called freeware) is licensed at no cost, or for an optional fee. It is usually closed source.

We ought to say something to them I guess.
